7.4/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 7.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Music Land remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have nine minutes to spare today, yes, you should absolutely watch Music Land.
It is a perfect little slice of old-school Disney magic for animation nerds, though anyone who gets annoyed by constant brassy noise will probably hate it.
The whole story is super simple. We got a little violin princess from the sleepy Land of Symphony who falls in love with a cheeky alto sax boy from the Isle of Jazz.
Naturally, their parents are totally against it because classical and jazz do not mix. 🎻
What I love most is how nobody speaks any actual words. Instead, the characters "talk" by playing their own instruments, which is just brilliant.
Like, when the Queen Viola gets angry, her voice is this screechy, fast classical riff. It’s hilarious and also a bit stressful.
The poor sax kid gets caught and thrown into a giant metronome that acts as a jail cell.
The constant, loud tick-tock of the metronome in that scene is oddly terrifying. I actually had to turn my volume down a bit because it was getting on my nerves.
Then we get to the war. This is easily the best part of the whole short.
The classical side literally fires heavy musical notes out of organ pipe cannons. Meanwhile, the jazz side blasts back with giant brass horns that shake the whole screen.
I noticed a tiny detail where a fired musical note hits the ocean and splashes like a real rock. The level of detail the animators put into these silly gags is just wild.
It reminds me of how other early sound films, like the 1929 film Street Girl, tried to use music but never quite made it feel this alive.
The resolution happens so fast you might blink and miss it. Suddenly the parents realize music is cool, and they build a "Bridge of Harmony" between the islands.
Then we get a double wedding because why the heck not? It’s silly, it's fast, and it works.
Sure, the background art looks a bit dusty and faded today. But the sheer imagination on display makes most modern cartoons look lazy.
Go watch it on YouTube if you need a quick smile. It's totally worth your time.
