7.8/10

A definitive 7.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Narasinh Mehta remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're a film history nerd, you have to watch Narasinh Mehta at least once just to see where Gujarati cinema started. But if you’re looking for a plot that moves fast or has big dramatic swings, you might want to look elsewhere. It’s a quiet, earnest movie that feels like a long, slow Sunday morning.
It’s funny to think about how different this is from the early Hollywood stuff like The Match King. There’s no ego here, just a guy trying to live right. Master Manhar plays the saint, and he’s got this calm look about him that carries the whole thing.
The director, Chaturbhuj Doshi, clearly had a mission. He didn't want any of those classic "saint does something impossible" scenes. Instead, he leans hard into the Gandhian view of Narasinh Mehta. It feels honest, but it also feels a little bit like a history lesson.
You can tell the movie is trying to make you think about Vaishnava jana to. It’s the hymn that basically became the soundtrack to the Indian independence movement. It’s beautiful, sure, but there’s a part of me that misses the spectacle. Sometimes films from this era, like Salome, thrive on that weird, heightened energy. This one just… stays grounded.
There's a specific moment where the lighting shifts, and it looks like the film stock was struggling. It adds this weird, hazy texture to the frame. I kinda liked that. It felt more real than some pristine restoration would have.
I found myself thinking about The Violinist of Florence while watching this, mostly because both films rely so heavily on the power of a single person's devotion to their craft. Though, they are worlds apart in style. It’s interesting to see how different cultures tackled the idea of a 'hero' back then.
The pacing is… well, it’s a slow burn. Sometimes the scenes just sit there. There’s a quietness to it that feels intentional, but occasionally it drags enough to make you check your watch. If you go in expecting a standard biopic, you’re gonna have a rough time. If you go in wanting to soak up some history, it’s actually pretty neat. 🕊️
