6.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Night at the Crossroads remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you need a movie that moves like a bullet train, stay away. This thing is essentially a mood piece about men standing in the rain and looking suspicious. But if you dig old black-and-white stuff that feels like a fever dream you had after eating too much cheese, you'll probably get a kick out of it.
It’s definitely not for the casual viewer who wants answers served on a platter. You’ll be lost for most of the runtime, but honestly? That’s kind of the point. 🌧️
There’s so much mud in this movie. I don't mean metaphorical mud, I mean actual, thick, sticky French country mud. The characters are constantly wiping their boots or looking at the ground like they’re expecting the earth to open up and explain the plot.
Jean Renoir really didn't care about making things easy for us. The shadows are long, the houses look lonely, and Inspector Maigret just kind of wanders through it all with a pipe and a weary look that says he’d rather be literally anywhere else. It reminded me a bit of the suffocating feeling in Life, though much wetter.
There’s this one scene where a car is just… sitting there. It’s not doing anything. The camera lingers on it for so long that I started wondering if the projectionist had fallen asleep. It’s weirdly hypnotic.
I found myself thinking about Sharp Shooters while watching this, mainly because of how different the pacing is. Here, everything is quiet. Almost too quiet.
Maybe? A little? It’s definitely not a "tight" mystery. The plot points are scattered around like breadcrumbs in a storm. If you try to map out who killed who and why the car ended up in that garage, you’re going to get a headache. Just let the fog wash over you.
It’s not perfect. Some of the acting feels like it’s coming from a stage play, all loud and dramatic in a way that clashes with the quiet, dreary scenery. But then there’s a moment where a character just turns their head, and you believe them entirely. It’s that kind of movie. Watch it late at night when the house is quiet. Or don't. It doesn't really care if you're watching or not. 🕵️♂️
