6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. One Frightened Night remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for those creaky, black-and-white 'old dark house' movies where everyone is hiding a secret and the lightning is always flashing, then yes, sit down and watch this. If you need pacing that feels modern or characters that act like actual human beings, you’re going to hate it. It’s got that specific, slightly dusty charm of a 1935 B-movie that doesn't care if the plot holes are big enough to drive a Model T through.
The whole premise is just an excuse to trap a bunch of vultures in a mansion. You’ve got the doctor, the lawyer, the housekeeper—the usual suspects. Watching them squirm when the old man decides to shake up the will is actually kind of fun.
The best part of One Frightened Night is the arrival of the two girls claiming to be the granddaughter. The movie doesn't bother with subtle mystery; it just throws them into the mix and waits for the sparks to fly. It feels like watching a stage play that someone accidentally filmed, and I mean that in the best way possible.
There’s a moment where a character walks into a room, looks around, and says something that’s meant to be ominous but just comes off as hilariously stiff. It’s those little imperfections that make it stick in your head. It’s a lot like Film 17 in how it prioritizes the vibe over the actual logic of the mystery.
The mansion is basically just a few sets pushed together, but they make it look spooky enough. You’ve got your classic shadows, your secret doors, and a housekeeper who looks like she’s seen a ghost or just had a very bad cup of coffee. It’s not as atmospheric as some of the heavier stuff like Lelícek ve sluzbách Sherlocka Holmesa, but it’s got a weird energy.
Don't expect a masterpiece. Expect a movie that knows exactly what it is and is happy to stay right in its lane. It’s a bit like watching Kicked About—it's short, it's punchy, and it’s over before you have time to really overthink it. Grab a snack, turn off your brain, and enjoy the ride 🕵️♂️.
