Oz University: A Bizarre Technicolor Time Capsule

If you are a fan of silent-era oddities or historical film artifacts, maybe. If you want a coherent plot or, you know, normal human acting, run for the hills. This is for the kind of person who enjoys digging through dusty archives at 2 AM.

Oz University is exactly the kind of mess you’d expect from a 1936 student pageant. It’s got that lovely, slightly off-kilter two-strip Technicolor look that makes everyone’s skin look like they’ve been rubbed down with orange marmalade. It’s a total trip.

The premise? Basically, the Wizard is bored at the University of Michigan. He decides to kidnap a bunch of students and turn them into characters from Oz. It sounds like a premise for a low-budget horror flick, but it plays out like a weird school play where no one quite knows where to stand.

Some Observations from the Cheap Seats

The transformation sequences are honestly hilarious. You see the actors standing next to their 'true' Oz selves, and it looks like a glitch in an old video game. The effort is there, though. You can really feel the students trying to make the most of those stiff costumes.

• The colors are aggressively bright. Like, eye-watering bright.
• The acting is… well, let's just say they are enthusiastic.
• I spent most of the runtime trying to figure out who was playing who.

It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in Pastrytown Wedding, but with way more existential dread regarding the curriculum. Watching Professor Wogglebug hand out a blue book exam to a bunch of people dressed as Jack Pumpkinhead is a level of surrealism that beats almost anything modern movies try to pull off.

The movie drags in the middle when they get to class. I found myself checking my watch, which is impressive given how short it actually is. It’s not quite as kinetic as The Big Stampede, but it’s definitely more confusing.

It’s not a masterpiece. It’s barely a movie, really. But there’s something undeniably charming about seeing people in 1936 just go for it with such commitment to the bit. They really wanted to make this work, even if the end result feels like a fever dream caught on film. 🎃✨
