6.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Pas paa pigerne remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you are into old silent comedies that feel like they were filmed in someone’s backyard, give Pas paa pigerne a look. It’s perfect for a lazy Sunday when you want to turn your brain off completely. If you hate black and white movies where people move a little too fast, you will probably want to skip this one. 🎬
I honestly didn't know what to expect from a Danish movie from 1930. But it’s mostly just people falling over and looking confused for an hour.
The main guys are Fyrtårnet og Bivognen. One is really tall and skinny, and the other is short and round.
It is a classic look. It's like Laurel and Hardy but they wear different hats and feel a bit more... European?
They spend a lot of time around a group of girls. The title literally means "Watch out for the girls" or something like that, which is funny because the girls are usually the smart ones.
There is a scene where a girl is brushing her hair and the camera just waits there. It’s not creepy or anything, it just feels like the director forgot to say cut.
The fashion is so weird to see now. Everyone is wearing these heavy wool coats and tiny hats even though it looks like summer.
How did they even move around in those things without sweating to death? I get hot just looking at them.
The slapstick is actually okay. It is not as fast as Fast and Furious (the 1927 one, obviously), but it has its moments.
I laughed out loud when the short guy tripped over a bucket. It was so predictable but the timing was just right.
The film looks a bit scratchy. Sometimes a giant white line just flickers across the screen for no reason at all.
It adds to the charm, I guess. It feels like you found a secret treasure in your grandpa's attic.
Marguerite Viby is in this too. She has this great energy even when she is just standing in the background.
You can tell she was going to be a big star later on. She just has that look.
I kept thinking about Good Morning, Nurse while watching. There is a similar vibe of "let's just put funny people in a room and see what happens."
Sometimes it works. Sometimes they just stare at each other for a bit too long.
The plot doesn't really matter. It’s more like a bunch of skits held together by some very thin string.
I think they forgot what the main story was halfway through. But that's fine because the tall guy is doing a funny walk.
There is this one part with a bicycle. The tall guy looks like a giant spider trying to ride a tricycle.
It’s hilarious because his legs are way too long for the frame. He keeps hitting his knees on his chin.
I liked the music they added to the version I saw. It was very bouncy and had a lot of horns.
Maybe it was a bit too loud at times? My cat got scared during one of the chase scenes and ran under the couch. 🐈
If you've seen Poker Faces, you know how these old comedies go. They aren't trying to change your life or make you cry.
They just want you to smile for an hour and then go about your day. It's refreshing.
Is it a masterpiece? Probably not. But it is comfy.
The ending feels like they just ran out of film. It just... stops.
I sat there for a second wondering if my player broke. But no, that was just how they did things back then.
The way the short guy wiggles his mustache is something you don't see anymore. It's a lost art form, really.
I also noticed the extras in the background. They look like they don't know they are being filmed.
One guy in the back is just staring at the camera with a very confused face. It's my favorite part of the whole movie.
It's better than Luck and Pluck in my opinion. It feels more honest.
Anyway, if you like physical comedy, check it out. It is way better than some of the big budget stuff they pump out now.
Just don't expect a deep message or a twist ending. It's just two guys and some girls and a lot of nonsense.
I'd watch it again on a rainy night. Maybe with some popcorn and the volume turned down a bit.
It's a weird little window into 1930. I'm glad I watched it even if I forgot most of the character names already.
