4.6/10

A definitive 4.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Racing Blood remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you have a soft spot for grainy, old-school horse racing dramas, you will probably get a kick out of Racing Blood. It is simple, it is fast, and it does not try to reinvent the wheel. If you are looking for complex character arcs or modern pacing, though? Stay away. You will be bored by the first act.
The whole thing feels like it was filmed on a shoestring budget in someone’s backyard. The colt at the center of the story is actually quite charming, mostly because it looks like it has no idea it is supposed to be acting. It just wants to stand there and chew on hay while the actors deliver lines about destiny and winning big. 🐴
There is this one scene where the jockey is trying to convince everyone the horse has 'the spark.' He stares deep into the animal's eyes for a solid ten seconds too long. It felt like the editor just gave up and decided to keep the whole take in. It is weirdly hypnotic.
You can tell the movie *really* wants you to feel the stakes during the final race. The camera work gets all shaky, and the editing speeds up, but you can see the same background fence passing by over and over again. It reminded me a bit of the frantic, low-stakes energy in The Kid Brother, though without the same level of charm.
The dialogue is mostly just people shouting instructions at a horse or at each other in tight stables. It is not exactly Shakespeare, but it is functional. Sometimes the background noise in the stables is louder than the actors, which honestly made it feel more authentic. Like, yeah, horses are loud, I get it.
It is not a masterpiece, but it is not trying to be. It is just a movie about a guy and his horse, and sometimes that is enough for a rainy Tuesday night. Just don't go in expecting the intensity of some of the more serious sports dramas you might have seen.
I left feeling like I had seen this story a dozen times before. But there is something strangely comfortable about that. It’s like eating cold pizza—not gourmet, but it hits the spot when you're tired.
