6.7/10

A definitive 6.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Rakoczy-Marsch remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old, black-and-white military romances where everyone stands a little too straight, you might get a kick out of Rakoczy-Marsch. If you’re looking for something with a bit of grit or real human messiness, you’re probably going to be bored to tears. It’s definitely for the crowd that enjoys Pleasures of the Rich or those old-world dramas where the biggest stakes are a bruised ego and a dance card.
The whole thing feels like it was filmed inside a box. Everything is so polished and precise that it loses all the air.
Gustav Fröhlich is doing his best here, but he’s basically playing 'The Determined Lover' by numbers. You can see the gears turning in his performance. It’s not bad, just... very practiced.
The brother, Arpad. Man, is he a piece of work. He spends half the movie acting like he’s the guardian of the galaxy instead of just a guy with a sister.
I couldn't help but compare the pacing to The Extra Girl. While that one has its own problems, it at least feels like it’s moving somewhere. This movie? It’s just marching in place.
The rich rival character is basically a cardboard cutout. He shows up, looks rich, scowls, and exits. I don’t think he says anything that isn’t about his own ego.
It’s a bit of a shame. There’s a decent story buried under all the stiff dialogue. Sometimes the actors seem to forget they’re supposed to be in love and just focus on getting their lines out before the next cut.
I found myself zoning out during the long shots of marching. Yes, we get it, they are soldiers. We don't need the extra three minutes of feet hitting the ground. 🙄
Is it a disaster? No. It’s just... fine. Like eating plain toast when you were hoping for a sandwich.
If you have nothing else to do on a rainy Tuesday, maybe give it a spin. Otherwise, you aren't missing much. It's a relic, plain and simple.
