6.4/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Sans famille remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a thing for old French dramas that don't mind lingering on a dusty road for five minutes too long, sure, give it a go. People who need a brisk pace or modern editing are going to be checking their watches by the second act. It’s a sad, weary little story. It doesn’t hold your hand.
Honestly, I went into this expecting something a bit more, I don't know, whimsical? A kid traveling with a troupe of animals sounds like a storybook, but this movie feels like a long, cold hike. The kid, Rémi, looks like he’s lived a thousand years in his eyes. He’s sold off like a piece of equipment, and the movie doesn't sugarcoat the loneliness of it.
The animals—a monkey and a dog—are the real stars. They have this way of looking at the camera that feels more honest than the human actors, who sometimes lean a little too hard into the melodrama of the era. There’s a scene where the troupe is resting near a bridge, and the silence is just… heavy. It’s not poetic, it’s just quiet. It feels like you’re actually sitting there in the dirt with them.
The pacing is all over the place. Some scenes fly by while others stick around long after the point has been made. It reminded me a bit of the aimless energy in The Rambling Ranger, but with more poverty and less gunfighting. It’s less about a narrative arc and more about just surviving the next town.
There's a moment toward the middle where the film almost stops being a movie and just becomes a travelogue of misery. It’s odd. You realize the director isn't trying to make a big emotional statement; he’s just showing you the road. It isn't as polished as Svengali, and it’s definitely not trying to be. It’s just kind of there, existing in its own little gray space.
I wouldn't call this a masterpiece. It’s a bit frayed at the edges. But there’s a stubbornness to it that I kinda respect. It doesn't care if you're bored. It just keeps walking. 🚶♂️
