5.7/10

A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Savoy-Hotel 217 remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school black and white mysteries that focus more on shadowy hallways than high-speed chases, you’ll dig Savoy-Hotel 217. It’s got that specific, slightly claustrophobic feeling of a hotel where everyone is hiding something. If you need snappy editing or a fast pace, stay away. This one takes its sweet time.
I found myself getting lost in the backgrounds more than the plot. The set designers really worked overtime to make that hotel look like the most expensive place in Moscow. Every lamp and velvet curtain feels like it’s judging the characters.
The whole thing kicks off with a body, which is standard, but the way our main guy—the waiter—just stands there looking guilty is kind of funny. He isn't some cool, hardboiled detective type. He’s just a guy who wants to keep his job, which makes the stakes feel weirdly personal.
There’s a moment in the lobby where the camera lingers on a tray of drinks that nobody touches. It stayed on screen for maybe five seconds too long. I started wondering if the waiter was going to trip over his own feet. He didn't, but it made me realize how tense the room actually was.
It’s not as snappy as Danger Within, but it has a thicker atmosphere. Sometimes I felt like I was breathing in the cigar smoke through the screen.
I kept thinking about Mensch ohne Namen while watching this. Both films have that same sense of a person trapped by circumstances they didn't create. It’s a recurring theme in these older movies that hits a bit differently when you’re watching them late at night.
The climax happens in a way that feels almost rushed compared to the slow crawl of the first hour. It’s a bit jarring. One second you're watching someone adjust their tie, and the next, everyone is shouting about motives.
Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it a solid way to spend a rainy evening? Definitely. Just don’t expect the mystery to be the smartest thing you’ve ever seen. It’s more about the vibe. 🍷
