3.2/10

A definitive 3.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Schwarzer Jäger Johanna remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly? Only if you have a weird obsession with German cinema from the thirties or really love watching people stare intensely at maps. If you want a fast-paced war flick, keep walking. If you like seeing how they used to frame shots to make people look incredibly noble while standing in a forest, you’ll be fine.
The whole thing centers on Johanna, who decides to ditch her dresses and go full-on soldier. She cuts her hair, puts on the black armor, and suddenly everyone is just really, really impressed by her posture. It reminded me a bit of the heavy-handed heroics you see in Zoya, though without as much of that specific, heavy-duty intensity.
There are moments where the movie tries to be grand, like when the resistance is planning their big moves. But then you catch a glimpse of the background extras just sort of milling about, clearly waiting for their lunch break. It’s funny how a scene meant to be a tense military council can feel like a group of people waiting for a bus.
The dialogue is thick. It’s the kind of stuff that sounds like it was written to be shouted from a balcony. Sometimes it lands, but mostly it just feels like the characters are lecturing the air. I found myself checking my phone during the longer speeches about duty. You know, just standard stuff that makes you miss the simpler, weirder energy of a short like The Tonic.
There’s this one sequence in the woods where the lighting goes all moody. It’s actually quite striking for a minute. Then, someone starts talking about 'the fatherland' again, and the mood breaks. The film struggles to decide if it wants to be an action movie or a lecture.
It’s not as chaotic or fun as Felix All Balled Up, obviously. It’s much more buttoned-up and serious, even when the plot makes zero sense. I guess that’s the charm for some people. I just kept wondering how they kept their hair so perfect in that armor.
If you're looking for something that feels like a dusty history book that someone tried to turn into a movie, you've found it. It’s not great, but it’s definitely something. Just don't go in expecting a revolution in filmmaking. It’s mostly just people standing around, looking very serious about 1809. ⚔️
