6.6/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Shoot the Works remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you’re into pre-Code Hollywood weirdness or have a soft spot for Spencer Tracy playing a guy who makes every wrong decision possible. If you want a smooth, polished musical, keep walking. This thing is a bit of a train wreck, but it’s the kind of train wreck where you can’t look away.
Nicky Nelson is the kind of guy who would bet his last dollar on a flea circus if he thought it would make him a star. Watching him lose Lily’s ring in a craps game within the first ten minutes is just… oof. You know he’s going to be a nightmare for the next hour, and he really doesn't disappoint.
The whole thing feels like a frantic scramble to get a song written and a life put back together. It’s got that jittery energy of people just trying to survive New York in the thirties.
I found myself wondering if anyone in this movie actually slept. They’re all just constantly moving between radio offices, carnivals, and cafes, shouting lyrics at each other. It’s exhausting just to watch.
There’s this moment where a gossip columnist gets clocked by Tracy, and it’s the most satisfying thing in the whole film. It feels like a total shift in tone, like the movie suddenly remembered it was supposed to be a drama before pivoting back to a romance. It’s jarring. I kind of loved it.
If you've seen The Whispering Chorus, you know that old films have a way of handling moral dilemmas with a shrug. Here, the characters just sort of roll with the punches. If you lose your girl, you just go to Iowa. Simple as that.
The pacing is all over the place. One minute we’re in a dive, the next we’re at the Varsity Club. It doesn't really care about connecting the dots, which honestly makes it feel a lot more human than those glossy studio pictures from later years. It’s messy, but it’s alive.
Would I watch it again? Probably not. Am I glad I saw it? Yeah, for the sheer chaos of it all. It’s not a masterpiece, but it sure as hell isn't boring. 🎲
