6.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Showgirl's Luck remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, you probably shouldn't watch Showgirl's Luck unless you’re a total sucker for film history or you just really like watching people struggle with early microphones. If you’re looking for a smooth, well-oiled narrative, look elsewhere—maybe check out In Old Arizona if you want your talkies with a bit more budget. But if you find charm in the sound of a film struggling to be born, you might find this weirdly endearing.
The whole thing has this frantic, sweaty energy. You can almost feel the director sweating behind the camera, praying the sound gear wouldn't give out. It’s not graceful, and the dialogue hits the floor with a thud more often than not. 🎥
Sadie Bedford and Olga McCann are clearly having the time of their lives trying to out-act each other. Every scene they share feels like a low-stakes wrestling match. There’s a moment where they’re both fighting for the camera, and you can see them physically jostling for space. It’s awkward, but in a way that makes me wonder if they actually hated each other off-set.
The technical side of this movie is... let's call it 'an experience.' The sound cuts in and out like a bad radio signal during a thunderstorm. I spent half the time trying to figure out if a line was mumbled or if the equipment just gave up. It’s not nearly as polished as The Road to Ruin, which had the luxury of a bit more stability.
There’s a strange, empty quality to the studio sets. It feels like a stage play that someone accidentally filmed. You notice the dust on the floor in the long shots. It's weirdly grounding, though. You aren't watching a movie about a film production; you’re watching a film production that forgot to hide its own seams. 🎬
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s a curiosity. A loud, messy, and occasionally frustrating curiosity that captures a very specific, weird moment in time. If you like the feeling of watching something that feels like it might break at any second, well, here you go.
