5.9/10

A definitive 5.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Song of the Trail remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for grainy, low-budget westerns from the thirties, you’ll probably find something to like here. If you need tight pacing or a story that doesn't feel like it’s being held together by duct tape, stay away. It’s a movie for people who want to watch guys in hats scowl at each other in the desert.
Song of the Trail isn't exactly reinventing the wheel. It’s basically a setup for guys to ride horses and act tough. The story is simple: bad guys cheat, cowboy gets mad, cowboy fixes it. Rinse and repeat.
There’s a moment about halfway through where they spend an eternity just walking toward a shack. It’s not atmospheric. It’s just slow. I think someone forgot to yell 'cut' for a solid thirty seconds too long.
Comparing this to something like Twisted Rails feels almost mean, but you can see the same DNA of cheap, quick-turnaround production. It’s the kind of movie that gets made because there’s an empty afternoon on the schedule and a few horses available to rent.
Honestly, the dialogue is mostly just filler between gunshots. It’s not meant to be Shakespeare, and that’s fine. I just wish the bad guys were at least a little bit cleverer with their cheating. It’s almost an insult to the audience.
If you like this sort of thing, you’ve seen it a hundred times. If you don’t, well, why are you watching this? There are no surprises here, just a lot of sand and some very grumpy men. 🤠
