4.8/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 4.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Syntipukki remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old black-and-white comedies that feel like they were filmed in a theater lobby, you might get a kick out of Syntipukki. It is not exactly a masterpiece of pacing, but it has this grumpy, distinct energy that made me chuckle more than once.
If you need high-stakes drama or modern editing, stay away. This one moves at the speed of a tired clerk on a Tuesday afternoon.
Adalbert needs 1000 marks to buy a dairy shop. The guy is desperate. He lands a job at the Sampo department store, but there is a catch. He is the official 'scapegoat'—the guy hired specifically to stand there and take the heat when customers lose their minds.
It is honestly a pretty dark setup for a comedy, if you think about it for too long. Watching him deal with the constant barrage of complaints is exhausting, but kind of funny in a mean way. 😅
There is this one scene where a customer is complaining about something so trivial, and Adalbert just nods with this thousand-yard stare. I felt that in my soul. We have all been that employee at some point.
It feels a bit like The Town Stands on Its Head in terms of its lighthearted, slightly chaotic vibe. It is not trying to change the world. It is just trying to get a few laughs out of the misery of bureaucracy.
The dialogue is snappy, though it gets a little repetitive once the 'complaint' bit runs its course. Honestly, the movie starts to drag once the joke becomes clear, but that’s fine. I didn't mind hanging out with these grumpy characters for a while.
It is not a life-changing experience. It is just a movie about a guy who wants a dairy shop and ends up in a retail hellscape instead. If you have ever worked behind a counter, you will probably feel a very specific kind of empathy for poor Adalbert. 🥛
Don't expect it to be as sharp as Her Majesty, Love, but for a rainy afternoon, it hits the spot just fine.
