5.6/10

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Strange Innertube remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly? Probably not, unless you’re the type of person who digs through bargain bins at antique stores hoping to find a haunted lamp. If you like classic, slightly manic, and totally nonsensical old-school comedies, you might get a kick out of the pure weirdness here. If you need a plot that actually connects from scene to scene without tripping over its own feet, stay far, far away.
The whole thing kicks off with Billy, Ben, and Clyde graduating from 'Taxi Driver school'—a concept that feels like it was written on the back of a napkin during a lunch break. They’re supposed to be driving cabs, but instead, they end up playing cat and mouse with jewel smugglers. It’s the kind of premise that sounds like a cartoon but plays out like a fever dream. 🚕
The movie moves with this frantic, disjointed energy that feels like the editor fell asleep at the wheel halfway through. One minute they’re in a cab, the next they’re hiding from thugs in a room that looks suspiciously like a closet. There is this one scene where a character is trying to be sneaky, but they’re wearing shoes that squeak so loudly I actually checked my own house for mice. It’s hilarious, but I don't think it was supposed to be.
Ben Blue is doing a lot of heavy lifting here with his physical comedy. He’s got this elastic face that shifts from confused to panicked in a split second. It reminds me a bit of the frantic pacing in The Haunted House, though with significantly less supernatural flair and way more jewel-hiding mishaps.
It’s not as polished as something like The Social Buccaneer, but it has that raw, gritty feel of a production that knew it was going nowhere and just decided to have a laugh anyway. I couldn't stop looking at the way they framed the shots—half the time someone’s head is cut off, or the camera is clearly tilted because the tripod was wobbling.
I guess if you’re looking for a film that feels like a glitch in the cinematic matrix, this is it. It’s not great, it’s not even really good, but it’s definitely something. Just don’t expect a masterpiece. Sometimes a movie is just a movie, and this one is barely that. 🤷♂️
