5.5/10

A definitive 5.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Bride's Mistake remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school, slightly frantic slapstick where people run through doors and trip over rugs, you might get a kick out of this. It’s definitely not for anyone looking for a tight script or actual logic. If you hate movies where the whole conflict could be solved by someone just saying "hey, wait a second," skip it.
Honestly, watching The Bride's Mistake felt a bit like being trapped at a party with a very loud aunt who won't stop talking about her neighbor's cat. It has that same kind of manic, repetitive energy. Virginia Whiting is clearly working harder than the script deserves, carrying most of the scenes on her shoulders while everyone else just kind of... hangs around looking confused.
There’s a moment in the second act where a vase breaks, and I swear, the camera just lingers on the shards for way too long. It’s like the editor took a bathroom break and forgot to cut. Awkward.
Vernon Dent is in this, which is always a treat, but he’s barely given anything to do besides walk in and look surprised. It reminds me of the aimless energy in The Lunkhead where characters seem to wander onto the set just to fill the frame. Why is he even there? I don't know. The movie doesn't know either.
The pacing is just weird. One minute we are sprinting through a hallway, and the next, we are stuck in a living room staring at wallpaper for three minutes. It lacks that smooth flow you see in better comedies like Husbands and Wives. Of course, that's a totally different animal, but still.
It’s not a good movie. It’s not even a particularly interesting bad movie. But there is a weird, dusty quality to it that makes me feel like I’m watching something I wasn't supposed to find. If you’ve seen Hot Biskits and felt like you needed more of that specific brand of 1930s-style confusion, well, here you go. 👰♂️
Don't expect much and you might actually have a decent time. Just don't look too closely at the plot holes. They are big enough to drive a truck through.
