I ended up watching Stranger Than Fiction #10 late last night. It's not really a movie in the normal sense, more like a 1934 version of a 'weird facts' YouTube channel.
Is it worth watching today? Honestly, yeah, but only if you're into history or really weird human behavior.
If you want a plot or deep characters, you’ll probably hate this. It’s just a bunch of clips thrown at your face. 🎞️
The first thing that really stuck with me was the guy catching alligators with his bare hands. He just... dives in there.
There's no safety gear. No special effects like you'd see in The Law of the North. Just a guy and a very angry reptile.
Then the film pivots to an American town run entirely by women. The narrator, Jimmy Wallington, sounds so shocked by this.
It’s funny how the movie treats a woman mayor like she's a magical creature from another planet. It has that same 'can you believe it?' vibe you find in A Blonde Dream.
I liked the bit about the girl shoemaker. She’s just a kid hammering away at leather boots like it's the most natural thing in the world.
The whole thing feels rushed. Like the editor was in a massive hurry to get to lunch.
One second you’re looking at a wishing well, and the next, there’s a woman captaining a tugboat. It’s very choppy.
It lacks the atmosphere of something like Hell Harbor. It’s just... facts.
There’s a moment where the camera lingers on a wishing well for way too long. I kept waiting for something to happen, but it just stayed there.
It’s kind of awkward. Like the narrator ran out of things to say for five seconds.
I noticed the film quality is pretty grainy, which actually makes it feel more real. It reminds me of the dusty look in Street Kids.
"These and a number of other realities that run counter to the usual order of things."
That’s what the guy says at one point. It’s a very 1930s way of saying 'people are weird.'
The tugboat segment was actually my favorite. Seeing this woman handle a giant boat in the harbor was actually cool, even if the movie treats it as a circus act.
It’s much more grounded than the drama in The City Gone Wild. No gunfights, just manual labor.
Anyway, don't expect a masterpiece. It's a time capsule that smells like old library books and swamp water.
If you've got nine minutes, give it a go. It’s better than scrolling through TikTok for the same amount of time. 🐊
