6.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Success at Any Price remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're into movies about guys who think they're the smartest person in the room—and honestly, usually aren't—this is right up your alley. It’s a bit cold and pretty cynical, so stay away if you’re looking for something that makes you feel good about humanity. It’s not a feel-good flick. It’s more like watching a car crash in slow motion, except the car is a guy in a sharp suit.
Joe is the kind of guy who makes you want to take a shower after watching him talk. He’s got this restless energy, like he’s constantly vibrating with anxiety about not being rich enough yet. There’s a scene early on where he’s just staring out a window, and you can tell he’s not looking at the city—he’s looking at a scoreboard.
The whole thing feels a lot more jagged than your standard 1930s drama. It reminded me a bit of the frantic pacing in The Thrill Chaser, but with way less joy. Sometimes the dialogue snaps so fast you almost miss the insults.
The middle of the film sags a little. It spends a lot of time on board meetings that feel more like theater than actual business. You can almost feel the movie trying to convince you that these men are changing the world, but it’s mostly just them shouting at desks.
Is it a classic? Maybe not. But it’s definitely not boring. It has a mean streak that keeps you paying attention, even when the plot starts to feel a bit thin. It’s not quite as bleak as Moral Suicide, but it gets pretty close to that same dark headspace.
Sometimes the movie stops dead just to let Joe be a total jerk for a minute. I didn't mind. It feels honest, in a weird way. Most of these types of stories try to justify the guy's actions, but this one just lets him be a nuisance. 💼
Anyway, watch it if you want to see someone get everything and enjoy none of it. Just don't expect a moral lesson at the end. It's just a guy being a jerk.
