A definitive 5.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Swellhead remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school melodramas where the moral is delivered with a sledgehammer, you’ll probably find something to love here. If you’re allergic to 1930s-era earnestness or characters who are basically impossible to root for, skip it. Honestly, it’s a bit of a relic.
Terry McCall is just exhausting. He’s the guy at the bar who won’t stop telling you about his high school glory days, except here he’s a professional athlete. Bryant Washburn plays him with this specific, oily charm that makes you want to trip him on his way to home plate. You spend the first twenty minutes just waiting for the universe to humble him.
When the accident happens, the film pivots hard. It’s sudden. One minute he’s bragging about his romantic conquests, and the next he’s stumbling around in the dark. The pacing is a bit of a mess here, honestly. It shifts from sports-hero-flick to "learn a lesson" drama without really checking if the audience is ready for the mood swing.
Watching him save the mascot, Mickey, is supposed to be this huge, cathartic moment. It’s sweet, I guess? But the execution is so rushed. It feels like the writers realized they had to get him to the finale and just sprinted through the character growth part. Like, 'Okay, he’s a good guy now, let’s get to the ending.'
It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in The Leather Pushers, where everyone is just kind of rushing to the next punchline or beat. You can tell they didn't have a massive budget to play with.
The final scene is actually pretty funny, though I doubt it was meant to be. He promises to change. He looks right at Mary Malone and swears he’s done with the bragging. Then the camera catches him doing exactly what he promised he wouldn't. It’s a tiny bit of cynicism in a movie that otherwise tries really hard to be wholesome.
I kind of respect the movie for that. It doesn't actually believe its own sermon. It knows Terry is a jerk, and it’s fine with leaving him as one. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s a quick watch if you’ve got nothing better to do on a Tuesday afternoon. Just don't go in expecting a life-changing experience. It’s just a movie about a guy who never really grows up. ⚾
