6.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Tango Bar remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for grainy, old-fashioned musicals where the plot is mostly an excuse to get to the next song, then sure, dive in. If you need your movies to have tight pacing or, you know, a story that actually makes sense, you are probably going to hate this.
It is not a masterpiece, but it has this weird, magnetic energy because of Carlos Gardel. He just holds the screen like he’s the only person in the building.
The whole thing starts on a boat, which is fine, but the way Ricardo just shrugs off the fact that Laura is a literal thief? Man. It is a total movie choice, but it works because he’s charming enough to pull it off. They stare at each other for a long time. Like, a really long time. I checked my phone twice, looked back, and they were still just doing that intense 1930s eye-locking thing.
The thief partner character is a total drag, though. Every time he shows up, the movie loses a bit of that light, breezy feel it has when it’s just focusing on the music.
Once they get to Barcelona, the movie basically stops pretending it’s a crime drama and becomes a pure showcase for the tango. The club itself looks like it was built in about twenty minutes out of cardboard and hope, but you stop noticing once the music starts. The choreography is slick, even if it feels like they’re dancing in a closet sometimes.
There is this one moment where Gardel starts singing, and honestly, the rest of the film could have been a blank screen and I probably wouldn't have minded. He’s got that voice that just pulls the air out of the room.
It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in Scandal, where the stakes feel high but also kind of silly. You know nobody is actually going to end up in jail for years; it’s all just part of the dance.
Anyway, don't overthink it. It is a movie about a bar, some bad luck, and a lot of music. It doesn't need to be deep. Sometimes just watching someone be incredibly smooth is enough to justify an hour and a half of your life. 💃
