7.1/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 7.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Täter gesucht remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that smell like old film stock and basement archives, yeah, put it on. If you need a fast-paced, high-stakes thriller to keep you from checking your phone, stay away. This one is for the folks who like to stare at the background of frames to see what the set designer was thinking.
The whole thing has this jittery, nervous energy. It’s not exactly smooth, but that’s kind of the charm, isn't it? It feels like something that could have easily been lost to time, and honestly, we’re lucky it wasn't.
There’s this one scene where a character walks past a window, and the light hits their face in a way that’s totally accidental, I’m sure. It’s grainy as hell. I love that.
You can tell the crew was working with whatever they had. Sometimes the shadows look like they’re doing more acting than the people in the room. It reminded me a bit of the frantic pacing in Kino-pravda no. 23 - Radio pravda, even if the subject matter is a world apart.
It’s not as tight as Princesse, à vos ordres!, but it’s got a grit that feels authentic to the era. It’s messy. It’s imperfect. It’s got that specific kind of European gloom that just sticks to you.
There’s a moment near the end where the main character just stares at a wall for what feels like a full minute. Maybe it was a reel change. Maybe it was a bold artistic choice. Who knows? Either way, I found myself staring at the wall right along with him. 🎞️
Don’t go in expecting a masterpiece. Go in expecting a weird, foggy night in a city that doesn't exist anymore. Just sit with it.
