6.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Beach Party remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have seven minutes to kill and want to see a horse in a bathing suit, this is your movie. 🏖️
It’s basically just Mickey and the gang hanging out at the ocean before everything goes completely wrong.
I wouldn't recommend it if you’re looking for deep character arcs or a message. It is 1931, guys, it is just about the vibes.
Minnie is busy setting up a picnic while the guys try to actually get in the water without drowning. 🧺
There is something deeply unsettling about Clarabelle Cow in a swimsuit, but you just kinda have to go with it.
The way Horace Horsecollar jumps into the water is so clunky it actually made me laugh out loud. He’s got zero grace.
Pluto gets a lot of the spotlight here, which is usually a win in these old shorts.
He spends a good chunk of the movie fighting a crab that just won’t quit. 🦀
The crab is surprisingly smart? It keeps outplaying a dog, which says a lot about Pluto, I guess.
The sound design has that classic early-Disney clink-clank-whistle style that feels very hand-made.
Walt Disney does the voice for Mickey, obviously, and it’s that super high-pitched squeak that sounds like he’s on helium.
I noticed the background art is actually pretty detailed for such a short gag reel. The waves look like little moving hills of ink.
Everything is fine until Mickey tries to be a good dog owner and tosses Pluto some sausages.
Mistakes were made.
Pluto dives in and comes back with an octopus instead of lunch. 🐙
The octopus doesn't just show up; it absolutely wrecks the entire picnic in about ten seconds.
It’s messy and fast and the animation gets really stretchy and weird during the fight.
It reminds me a bit of the physical chaos you see in The Gold Rush, but with more tentacles and less snow.
One thing that bothered me: where did that octopus even come from so fast? It was like it was teleported in.
One second it is sausages, the next it is a multi-armed nightmare crashing into the potato salad.
I also noticed a weird frame skip right when they start eating, like the film was chewed up by a projector once. It adds to the charm, I think.
It is a fun little watch if you’re bored or just want to see how they used to draw water. 🌊
Just don’t expect it to change your life or anything. It’s just a dog, a crab, and a ruined lunch.
Clarabelle’s dance moves are also way too energetic for a beach day.
I’m still thinking about that crab. It had a real attitude. 😠
