6.9/10

A definitive 6.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Case Against Mrs. Ames remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old movies where everyone talks in perfect, clipped sentences, you will probably dig this. It is definitely for people who prefer their drama served with a side of fancy evening gowns. If you are looking for something fast or gritty, steer clear. This one moves at the speed of a polite afternoon tea.
Madeleine Carroll is the whole show here. She plays Mrs. Ames with this kind of icy calm that makes you wonder if she actually did commit the murder or if she is just really tired of everyone's nonsense. Watching her navigate a courtroom while looking like she just stepped off a magazine cover is weirdly hypnotic.
The mother-in-law, played by Beulah Bondi, is the kind of villain who doesn't need to shout to make you uncomfortable. She just stares. She has this way of looking at people over her glasses that makes me want to apologize for things I haven't even done yet.
The pacing is a bit of a mess, though. Sometimes scenes end right when they get interesting. Other times, they drag on while characters just stand around discussing the weather or someone’s reputation. It reminds me a bit of the social maneuvering in Evelyn Prentice, though without the same punchy energy.
The legal strategy in this movie is hilarious. It feels like the lawyers are just making up the rules as they go along. It is not exactly a masterclass in jurisprudence, but it is fun to watch them yell at each other.
I kept waiting for a big twist that never really landed. Everything is pretty much on the surface, which is a bit of a letdown. But for a rainy afternoon? It works. It has that same stagy feel I noticed in Fashions in Love, where the sets feel more like a stage than a real location.
Overall, it is a bit of a relic. It is not going to change your life, but it is better than staring at a wall for an hour. Just do not expect any deep insights into the justice system. It is basically a high-stakes soap opera with better lighting.
