6/10

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Church Mouse remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school, snappy comedies where people talk really fast and everyone is wearing very sharp suits, you will probably dig The Church Mouse. If you get annoyed by the 'I can fix my boss's life' trope or need a modern pace to keep your attention, you might want to skip it.
It starts with this wild energy where the main character, Jenny, just crashes into a bank president's office. She is disheveled, frantic, and honestly kind of a headache to watch for the first ten minutes. But then something shifts.
Laura La Plante really sells the transition. It is not just about the clothes getting nicer or the hair getting fixed—though that definitely happens. It is the way she starts holding her shoulders differently when she walks across the office floor.
Sometimes the movie feels like it is running on coffee and pure adrenaline. The dialogue zips back and forth so fast you might miss a punchline if you sneeze. I caught myself rewinding a bit just to make sure I heard the snarky comments correctly.
It’s not quite as layered as Tugboat Annie in terms of raw character grit, but it has a light, bubbly texture that works in its favor. It doesn't try to be anything other than a pleasant distraction.
I did find myself wondering why nobody in this bank actually seems to do any banking. They are all just dealing with each other’s personal drama. Maybe that is just how 1930s finance worked? Probably not.
The pacing is a bit uneven, sure. There are moments where the plot just stops dead to let two people have a conversation that goes on for a beat too long. But then, the camera catches a look on someone's face, and you forgive it. It’s that kind of movie.
If you have seen Babs, you know that style of storytelling where the personality carries the weight of the scenes. This is exactly that. It is a little bit messy, a little bit predictable, and mostly just fun to watch unfold.
Don’t look for deep meaning here. Just watch the hats. The hats are great. 👒
