6/10

A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Count of the Old Town remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you have a soft spot for pre-war Swedish cinema. If you need tight pacing or a plot that makes sense every single second, you are going to hate this. But if you want to hang out in a dusty hotel with a bunch of eccentric strangers, it’s a weirdly cozy way to kill an afternoon.
The Count of the Old Town isn't exactly a high-octane thriller, despite the premise of chasing a jewel thief. It’s more about the people living in the hotel than the actual crime. You’ve got characters like 'Greven' and 'Blomman' who feel like they’ve been sitting in that lobby for forty years.
I found myself zoning out during the police stuff. Inspector Göransson is fine, I guess, but the movie really lights up whenever he’s not around. The way people talk in those narrow hallways? It’s got this strange, rhythmic quality that feels almost stage-y. Ingrid Bergman pops up too, and yeah, you can tell she was always going to be something special.
It’s funny how movies like this compare to stuff like Barbary Coast. Both have that 'lived-in' feel, but while one is all American grit, this one is distinctly chilly and Swedish. It’s less about the gold and more about the shadows.
Sometimes the plot just stops. Like, the characters decide to have a chat about absolutely nothing, and the investigation just waits outside. It feels a bit like a The Charming Deceiver situation where the tone is a lot more important than the stakes. 🕵️♂️
Don't expect a masterpiece. Expect a movie that looks like it was made by people who were just happy to be on set that day. It’s flawed, the lighting is sometimes a bit flat, and the mystery isn't exactly Sherlock Holmes level stuff. But man, it’s got a personality that just doesn't quit.
I think I’ll keep thinking about that lobby for a while. Not because it was a great movie, but because it felt real in a way that modern stuff rarely does.
