5/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Devil's Mate remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you're the type who likes their mystery movies short, punchy, and completely unconcerned with explaining how a poison dart hits a guy in an electric chair room without anyone seeing the shooter, The Devil's Mate is probably your speed. If you need logical consistency or characters who act like actual human beings, maybe skip this one.
The whole thing kicks off with a death row inmate who has a secret. He's ready to spill the beans. Then, pfft. A dart hits him. He's dead. The movie doesn't waste a second pretending to be deep. It just hits the ground running.
We’ve got a detective and a reporter. You know the drill. She’s way smarter than he is, but he gets to carry the badge. Peggy Shannon brings a certain energy that makes you wonder why she’s hanging out with these guys anyway. The chemistry is… well, it’s there, I guess. It feels like they were filmed in different rooms sometimes.
It’s weird how these old crime flicks always have that one scene where everyone stands around a desk looking at a piece of paper. It happens here too. Someone points at a map, and suddenly they know exactly where the villain is hiding. Convenient, right?
I couldn't help but compare the vibe to stuff like The Woman in the Case, though this one feels a bit more hurried. There’s no time for nuance when you’re trying to squeeze a whole conspiracy into an hour.
Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it fun? Sure. It’s got that grimy, pre-code era feel that I always find kind of charming. It doesn't try to be Hallelujah. It just wants to get to the reveal before the film reel runs out.
Also, keep an eye on George 'Gabby' Hayes. Seeing him pop up is always a trip if you grew up on westerns. He’s not doing his usual thing here, which is honestly refreshing. The whole cast feels like they’re just happy to be working.
I left the screen feeling like I’d just eaten a bag of potato chips. Not exactly a meal, but I don't regret it. Sometimes, that’s all you really need from a movie night. 🕵️♂️
