5.7/10

A definitive 5.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Dish Ran Away with the Spoon remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have any appreciation for the sheer, unhinged energy of early animation, yes. You should watch The Dish Ran Away with the Spoon. If you are looking for a relaxing bedtime story, keep looking. This thing is pure, concentrated chaos that feels like it was written by someone who had never actually seen a kitchen but had heard rumors about how stuff works in one.
The whole thing starts off sweet enough with dishes doing their own chores. It’s cute, in that 1930s way where everything has googly eyes and bounces to the beat. Then, the spoon tries to propose. It’s genuinely sweet until the baby spoon starts wailing and ruins the moment. Like, read the room, kid.
Things take a hard left turn when the dough enters the scene. It rises up like some kind of yeasty ghost and just starts drinking water. Watching it transform into a weird, aggressive version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is... something else. It is genuinely a little bit creepy. Who knew a packet of yeast could be so threatening?
The battle scene that follows is pure comedy gold. The utensils start using a spatula as a catapult to lob canned goods at the dough monster. It’s basically a culinary war zone. I was honestly rooting for the rolling pin. It has that same chaotic energy I remember from The Old Soak, where you’re just waiting for the next disaster to strike.
The whole short feels like a weird cousin to the more polished stuff you see elsewhere. It lacks the cohesive polish of later animation, but that’s exactly why I like it. It feels alive, even if that life is a bit deranged. Sometimes it’s nice to watch a short that doesn't try to teach you a lesson or hit some profound emotional beat. It just wants to see if a spoon can play the pans like a drum kit.
It’s not as heavy or dramatic as The Loyal 47 Ronin, obviously. But sometimes you just want to see a bundt cake get involved in a brawl. 🍴
