5.8/10

A definitive 5.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Furies remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Is The Furies worth digging up today? Honestly, for anyone who loves old-school melodramas where things go from zero to a hundred in five minutes flat, yeah, you might get a kick out of it. If you're looking for something subtle or, you know, realistic... probably just skip this one. It’s a wild ride, but not everyone’s cup of tea.
This film is a prime example of a story that just keeps escalating, and you have to respect its commitment to the chaos. It’s not about quiet character studies; it’s about one dramatic twist after another, piling up on poor Fifi Sands.
Fifi starts off just trying to get a divorce from her husband. A husband, by the way, who is described as constantly unfaithful. You kinda feel for her right from the start. That initial relief, though, when she announces at a dinner party she’s finally free? It’s palpable.
But then, her childhood sweetheart, Owen McDonald, shows up. He's a little too interested in the fact that she’s not asking for alimony. It's a quick, telling detail that really makes you go, hmm. 👀 You wonder about his intentions.
Things really hit the fan when Fifi’s young son, Alan, announces his father has been murdered. And then, without much hesitation, he points the finger at McDonald, implying Fifi is trying to shield him. Talk about a curveball! This kid doesn't mess around.
Naturally, Fifi goes to her husband’s lawyer, Bedlow, for help. This is where the movie just decides to go full throttle into bonkers-town. Bedlow, the lawyer who was supposedly preventing her divorce, suddenly has a change of heart. Or rather, a change of everything.
He locks her in the apartment. Yes, the lawyer. He then confesses his love for her, which is already a lot to take in. But wait, there’s more! He then casually admits to murdering her husband. It’s a moment that truly makes you blink. I actually re-wound that bit, just to make sure I heard it right. 🤯
The whole exchange between Fifi and Bedlow is just… *a lot*. Janet Ford as Fifi does a great job with the shock and horror. H.B. Warner as Bedlow really commits to being this unhinged, lovesick murderer. It’s not subtle acting, but it fits the film’s energy perfectly.
You can almost feel the movie trying to convince you this moment matters. And it does! It's the whole point. But the way it’s delivered, it's just so *sudden*.
Thank goodness for Dr. Cummings and Alan, who come to her aid. Because honestly, Fifi was in a bind there. The resolution comes just as quickly as the twists, with Bedlow leaping to his death. It's a very neat, very tidy way to wrap up such a messy situation.
And then Fifi finds happiness with Dr. Cummings. Just like that. It’s a happy ending, but after all that chaos, it feels a tiny bit rushed, like the film just wanted to get to the 'happily ever after' part before you could question it too much. 😅
The Furies is a movie that doesn't waste time. It throws everything it has at you, one melodramatic twist after another. It’s a great pick for a movie night if you’re in the mood for some pure, unadulterated drama with absolutely no pretense of realism.
