5.6/10

A definitive 5.6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Gala Performance remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for dusty, chaotic German comedies from the early 1930s, The Gala Performance might be your jam tonight. But honestly, if you can't stand loud people talking over each other in black-and-white, you will probably turn this off after ten minutes. 🍿
It is basically about a chaotic theater show where everything that can go wrong does. Typical backstage stuff, but turned up to eleven.
I watched this on a rainy Tuesday with low expectations. And honestly? It kinda won me over, even with all the screeching.
The first thing you notice is the sheer number of people on screen. It feels like Frederic Zelnik just hired every actor in Berlin who was free that afternoon.
Half the time, the camera doesn't even know who to look at. One guy is *jugling* in the corner while another couple is having a massive fight about a hat.
Olga Tschechowa is here, looking incredibly fancy. She has this way of looking at the other actors like they are annoying insects, which made me laugh out loud. Then you have a very young Walter Slezak. He is so bouncy and energetic here, it is almost exhausting to watch him move.
Some of the humor is... well, it's old. Like, "man slips on a prop and falls into a tub of water" old.
But the energy is what keeps it alive. It has that frantic, desperate vibe you get in other early talkies like In Conference.
There is this one scene where a trumpet player keeps messing up his cue. The conductor's face turns this shade of gray that even the black-and-white film can't hide. 🎺
It goes on for five minutes. Just five minutes of a guy failing to blow a trumpet. I loved it.
On the other hand, the romantic subplot is completely dead on arrival. You can tell the movie doesn't care about it either, because it just disappears for like thirty minutes.
It is definitely not as artsy as something like The Courage of Silence. It is just pure, messy entertainment.
Sometimes the audio gets really muffled. I think someone stood too far from the microphone during a big speech near the end.
But hey, that is the charm of these early sound films. They were figuring it out as they went.
If you want a polished masterpiece, look elsewhere. But if you want to see some vintage German chaos, give it a spin.
