If you enjoy old-school French comedies where the humor comes from watching a guy sweat through his collar while trying to please everyone, you’ll dig this. It’s light, breezy, and feels like a polite dinner party gone slightly sideways. But if you have zero patience for characters who refuse to grow a backbone for ninety minutes, you will probably want to throw your remote at the screen. 📺
Honestly, the whole premise is a nightmare for anyone who values boundaries. Watching our lead just… fold, every single time someone asks for a favor, it’s exhausting. You find yourself yelling 'Just walk away!' at the monitor.
There’s a bit about halfway through—I won't ruin it—where he tries to juggle three different social obligations in the same building. The editing gets a little frantic, and honestly, it’s the best part of the movie. It’s messy and doesn't quite stick the landing, but it feels real in a way that modern, polished comedies never do.
Raymond Galle carries the weight of the world on his shoulders here. He has this look—you know, that deer-in-headlights stare—that never really goes away. It’s funny for a while, then it’s just sad, then it’s funny again. That kind of back-and-forth isn't easy to pull off.
If you've seen The Cricket, you might recognize a similar vibe in how they handle character dynamics. It’s not trying to be high art. It’s just trying to get you to giggle at someone else's expense for an hour and a half.
The sound design is… well, it exists. There are moments where the dialogue feels like it’s being shouted from inside a tin can. It adds to the charm, I guess? Or maybe it’s just old. It reminded me a bit of the technical quirks in Der Schuß im Tonfilmatelier where you can just feel the limitations of the tech they had on hand.
It’s not a masterpiece. It’s a movie you watch on a rainy Tuesday when you don't want to think about your own to-do list. Just don't look for any deep lessons on human nature. There aren't any. Just a guy saying 'yes' when he really, really should have said 'no.' 🤐
