6.5/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Mysterious Avenger remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you have a soft spot for grainy, black-and-white horse operas, you might find a sliver of charm here. If you’re looking for something with actual stakes or a plot that doesn't feel like it was written on a napkin during lunch, skip it. It's essentially a relic. You’ll probably hate it if you need your Westerns to have even a hint of grit, but if you’re into the classic 'who stole my cow' trope, pull up a chair.
The whole thing feels like a stage play that got lost on its way to a theater. Everyone stands around in these wide, dusty shots waiting for their turn to talk. It’s almost impressive how much they yell about cattle rustling without actually doing anything about it for most of the runtime.
The son—bless his heart—is the only one who seems to realize that standing around arguing is a waste of time. He shows up, looks heroic, and suddenly the bad guys have nowhere to hide. It's not exactly high-tension drama. It reminded me a bit of the pacing in The Dare-Devil Detective, though at least that one had a bit more snap to the dialogue.
The music, when it kicks in, is loud and aggressively cheerful. It completely clashes with the 'serious' tone the actors are trying to pull off. Sometimes the movie forgets it's supposed to be a mystery. It feels more like a hangout session for a group of guys who just wanted to play cowboy for a few weeks.
It’s not as tedious as The Betrothed, but it’s definitely not a lost masterpiece. I found myself checking my watch, not because it was bad, but because it was just so predictable. Every beat lands exactly where you expect it to, like a clock that’s five minutes slow.
Still, watching it reminded me why I love these old flicks. They don't try to be clever. They just exist. They have their own weird, dusty rhythm that you don't see anymore. 🤠
At the end of the day, it's just a movie about a kid catching bad guys while the adults argue over nothing. It’s fine. It’s not great, but it’s fine. And sometimes, that’s all you really need.
