6.5/10

A definitive 6.5/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Phantom of Crestwood remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Honestly, only if you're a fan of early talkies or just have a weird soft spot for grainy, black-and-white murder mysteries. If you need pacing that feels like 2024, skip it. You'll probably be bored to tears. But if you like watching people in evening gowns acting guilty, it's a decent way to kill an hour.
The whole thing feels like it's trying to be a radio play with cameras. That makes sense, I guess, given the history behind it. There's this one moment where a character is staring off into the middle distance and I swear they were waiting for a sound cue that never came. It's charming in a 'we are figuring this out as we go' kind of way.
The mystery isn't exactly Sherlock Holmes. You can pretty much guess who is hiding what within the first twenty minutes. But the fun isn't the solution. The fun is watching everyone try to be smooth while they're clearly sweating through their suits.
It reminded me a little bit of the energy in Across to Singapore, where things move along because they have to, not because the story is necessarily demanding it. It’s not deep, it’s not complex, and it’s certainly not high art. It’s just a movie about a bunch of people who really, really didn't want their secrets getting out.
The dialogue is super snappy, maybe too snappy. People don't talk like that. But it's fun to hear them spit out these lines like they're in a race. It reminds me of the vibe in Trixie from Broadway, where the world feels small, contained, and a little bit staged. 🕵️♂️
Sometimes the camera just sits there. It feels like it’s forgotten it’s supposed to be filming. I didn't mind it. It gave the house a personality. A dusty, judgmental personality. You keep waiting for the *Phantom* to actually do something cool, but mostly it's just people talking in rooms.
It's not a masterpiece. It’s barely a sturdy movie. But there's something about it that keeps you watching, even if you’re mostly just waiting for the next person to act suspicious. 🎞️
