6.2/10

A definitive 6.2/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Road Back remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Should you watch The Road Back? If you are into history and don't mind a movie that feels a bit like it’s struggling to hold itself together, absolutely. If you want a tight, punchy narrative that hits every beat with precision, you might find yourself checking your watch. It is definitely for people who prefer messy human stories over neat ones.
Coming back from the front lines in this movie is less of a parade and more of a slow, awkward stumble into a living room that doesn't recognize you. The transition from the trenches to the hometown is handled with such a strange, jarring shift in tone. One minute there is mud and explosions, and the next, there is just... silence and awkward dinner conversations. It’s effective, but in a way that feels almost accidental.
There is this moment where the guys are sitting around trying to act like they haven't seen the end of the world. The dialogue feels like it’s tripping over its own feet, but maybe that is the point? War changes how you talk. Nobody seems to know what to do with their hands.
I found myself thinking about The Swamp while watching this. Both films have this weird, heavy atmosphere where the characters are just waiting for something to happen that never really does. It’s the kind of pacing that might annoy some, but I kind of dig it.
The movie isn't interested in being a big, grand statement. It’s just a series of vignettes that don't quite lock together. Some performances are great, others feel like they are from a completely different project. It’s an uneven watch, but I’d take that over something sterile any day of the week.
It’s not a masterpiece. But it’s got heart. It feels like the filmmakers actually spent time thinking about what it’s like to lose your youth to a crater. There is a sadness here that isn't forced, which is rare. You can feel the fatigue in every frame.
Sometimes the film stops a beat too early, leaving a thought hanging in the air. I kept wanting to know what happened to the secondary characters, but the movie just moves on. It doesn't care if you're keeping up. Honestly, that’s refreshing. 🎞️
