5.8/10

A definitive 5.8/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. The Silence of Dean Maitland remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a thing for old British dramas that feel like they were filmed inside a wooden box, sure. It’s perfect for people who like their revenge served cold and very, very talky. If you need pacing, action, or anything that doesn’t involve people staring intensely at curtains, stay away.
I sat through The Silence of Dean Maitland last night and I’m still not entirely sure what to make of the pastor. He’s the kind of character who spends the whole movie looking like he’s got a pebble in his shoe. You can see the guilt eating him up, but he just keeps on preaching.
Twenty years in prison is a long time. The movie does a weird job of showing that passage of time. One minute the guy is getting locked up, and then suddenly he’s back in town looking like he’s seen a ghost. The makeup department didn't really try to age him too much, which is kind of hilarious.
There’s a scene in the church that goes on forever. It’s just the pastor and his own conscience, I guess. It’s almost painful to watch because the silence is so heavy it feels like the screen is gonna crack. Sometimes it works, but mostly it just made me check my watch.
The whole revenge plot feels a bit secondary to the melodrama. It’s not exactly Hitting Hard when it comes to tension. It’s more like watching someone try to untangle a ball of yarn while wearing oven mitts.
I kept waiting for a big showdown. You know, the kind where everyone shouts their feelings and truths come out. Instead, it just kind of… ends. It’s a very quiet movie, which fits the title, I suppose. But for a story about a guy losing twenty years of his life, you’d expect a bit more fire.
It’s not bad, really. Just very, very old-fashioned. It makes me miss the weird energy of something like New Deal Rhythm. At least that had some pep to it.
Anyway, don’t expect a masterpiece. Expect a slow burn that might burn out before it even gets to the logs. 🕰️
