7.7/10

A definitive 7.7/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Two Sinners remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a soft spot for pre-code era melodrama and don't mind a plot that turns into a fever dream halfway through, you’ll probably enjoy Two Sinners. It’s definitely not for folks who need their movies to be logically sound or grounded in any kind of reality.
Honestly, the first half is a quiet, almost nice character study. Then the second half hits and things just go completely off the rails. 🚂
Otto Kruger plays Henry Vane with this heavy, tired energy that actually works. He’s a guy who just wants a quiet life after fifteen years in a cell, which is fair enough. But the movie keeps throwing him into these high-stakes dramas that feel like they belong in a different film entirely.
The scenes with little Sally are surprisingly sweet. You can tell the movie really wants you to care about the bond between Henry and the governess, Elsie. It mostly works until it doesn't.
I have to mention the Maison Masque. It’s this prison where everyone has to wear masks. It feels like someone just decided to add a gothic horror element to a standard drama because they were bored. It’s very weird and I’m still not sure if it’s brilliant or just plain silly.
It reminds me a bit of the heavy-handed moral stakes you find in Circumstantial Evidence, but with more French scenery and unnecessary face coverings.
There’s a moment where Claudine just walks into traffic. It’s so blunt and sudden. You’re watching it thinking, wait, did that really just happen? It’s that kind of movie. Not everything lands, but you won't be bored.
If you're looking for something polished, look elsewhere. If you want to see a movie try to do five different things at once and barely hold it together, give it a shot. It's an odd one, but I'm glad I watched it. 🎭
