6.4/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 6.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Under Western Eyes remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a wet wool coat in the middle of winter, you’ll probably dig Under Western Eyes. It’s for the folks who prefer long, tense conversations over car chases. If you want a breezy afternoon watch, skip this one. You’ll probably hate how much time everyone spends staring at shadows or looking deeply uncomfortable in small rooms.
Honestly, the whole vibe is just exhausting in the best way. There’s this scene about halfway through where Razumov is just sitting at a desk, and the way the light hits his face makes him look like he’s aged ten years in five seconds. It’s not even a big moment. It’s just... sad.
The pacing is, let’s say, deliberate. Some people might call it slow. I’d call it suffocating, which feels like the point. You can feel the walls closing in on these characters.
There is this one guy in the background of the café scene who keeps adjusting his collar. He does it like four times. It’s so distracting, but it weirdly adds to the tension. Like even the extras are sweating bullets.
It’s not as snappy as An Inside Job, but it’s got a different kind of teeth. You aren't watching for the plot twists, really. You're watching for that specific look of betrayal that happens when someone realizes their life is permanently ruined.
I found myself thinking about the lighting in the office scenes long after it ended. It’s just... very gray. Very Russian. Very stuck. Maybe it’s not for everyone, but it’s definitely not trying to be.
It’s a heavy watch. Don't go in expecting a victory lap. It’s just a long, slow walk through a minefield of bad decisions. 🎞️
