5.9/10
Senior Film Conservator

A definitive 5.9/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Voice in the Night remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you have a strange itch for black-and-white dramas where everyone wears a suit and speaks like they’re reading from a manual, sure. It’s not exactly The Drop Kick in terms of energy, but it has this weird, sleepy charm.
If you hate movies where the stakes feel like they were written on a napkin during a lunch break, skip it. You’ll probably be bored within the first ten minutes.
The whole thing starts with Tim Dale deciding he’s done with his dad’s company. He goes straight for the polo mallet. It feels like such a weird pivot.
One minute he’s fighting about corporate policy, the next he’s out on a field looking like he belongs in a different genre entirely. The transition is jarring, but I kind of liked how little the movie cared about explaining why a guy would go from executive meetings to horses.
Eventually, the plot kicks in. Some small-town phone company is being bullied. It’s the classic 'big city vs. small town' setup, but with more telephone switchboards.
I found myself staring at the background extras. There’s this one scene in a lobby where two guys are just leaning against a wall, completely ignoring the tension. It’s almost more interesting than the dialogue.
The villains are led by this lawyer, Benton. He’s the kind of guy who probably practices his evil grins in the mirror. It’s all very predictable, but sometimes you just need a bad guy who is aggressively unpleasant to get the job done.
The way they try to force the company out of business involves a lot of whispering in dark rooms. It’s not exactly high-stakes hacking like we see today.
Watching this felt a bit like stumbling into a neighbor’s attic. Everything is covered in a layer of dust, and you find things that don't quite make sense anymore. It reminded me a little of the pacing issues in The Next Corner, though this is definitely less moody.
Anyway. It’s a movie. It exists. It fills an hour without asking you to think too hard, which is sometimes all you really need on a rainy Tuesday. Just don't expect it to change your life. ☎️
