6.1/10

A definitive 6.1/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. War Mamas remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like old-school, snappy shorts that don't overstay their welcome, you'll probably get a kick out of War Mamas. It isn't exactly high art, but it’s breezy and doesn't take itself too seriously. If you're looking for a grounded, accurate historical drama, stay far away. You'll likely hate the way it treats the war like a backdrop for a sitcom bit.
The whole thing feels like a fever dream of 1920s comedy tropes. The premise is so thin you could practically see through it, yet it works because Thelma Todd and Zasu Pitts have that weird, crackling energy together. Watching them try to navigate a room full of German officers while acting like they haven't got a clue is just… chef's kiss.
The transition from a regular night out to "accidental spy mission" happens faster than you can blink. One minute they're sipping drinks, the next they're digging for secrets. It’s the kind of logic that only exists in movies from this era, where the stakes feel monumental but the tone stays light as a feather. 🕊️
I couldn't help but think about other films from the period, like The Wine Girl or the drama in The Unknown Soldier. They all have this specific, stiff-but-earnest quality. But where those might lean into the heavy stuff, War Mamas is just interested in the gag.
There is a sequence with Charlie Hall that feels like it was ripped straight out of a much better slapstick flick. He plays the exasperated officer so well it makes you wonder why he isn't the star of the whole thing. The way he adjusts his collar every time he gets annoyed is the kind of tiny detail that made me hit the rewind button.
It’s not a masterpiece. Honestly, it’s barely a meal, more like a snack. But sometimes a snack is all you need on a Tuesday night. If you've seen Wife Savers, you’ll recognize that same sense of "let's just see where this goes" energy. It's messy. It’s quick. It’s fine. 🍿
Sometimes the movie forgets it’s supposed to be about the war entirely. That's actually its best trait. It stops pretending to be a period piece and just lets the actors do their thing. I really appreciated that.
