7.4/10

A definitive 7.4/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. White Majesty remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
Look, if you want a sleek, modern thriller, keep walking. White Majesty is definitely for the crowd that likes their drama with a side of heavy sweaters and long, brooding stares at jagged horizons. If you have zero patience for old-fashioned moralizing or characters who communicate primarily through heavy sighing, you’ll probably find this a bit of a slog.
But there’s something undeniably tactile about it. The snow doesn't look like digital slush; it looks heavy, freezing, and kind of miserable.
Jakob is the kind of guy who probably hates everyone but loves the rocks. He’s out there at night, blowing up snowdrifts like he’s performing some weird, dangerous chore, all while everyone else in the village is safe in bed gossiping about him. It’s a bit dramatic, sure, but watching him navigate those slopes makes you feel the frostbite.
The whole land-dispute plot feels like a leftover from a different era of storytelling. It’s messy and kind of petty, which honestly feels more realistic than some grand, noble struggle. It reminded me a little of the rural tension you see in The Wind, where the environment is really just waiting to kill you if you slip up.
The race to climb Monte Verità is the big finish, and it’s sweaty stuff. You can almost feel the movie trying to convince you that climbing this specific pile of rock is the only way to solve a legal dispute over a will. It’s ridiculous, but by that point, you’re kind of rooting for the guy just because he’s so stubborn.
It’s not a masterpiece, and it definitely shows its age. Some of the motivations are thinner than the mountain air, but if you’ve ever felt like the world is against you and you just want to go climb something, you might get it. It’s a bit like watching This Sporting Age, but with more layers of wool and less sunshine. Just don't expect it to explain itself too much. It doesn't really care if you're keeping up. 🏔️
