6/10
Senior Film Conservator
A definitive 6/10 rating for a film that redefined the boundaries of cult cinema. Woman Unafraid remains a cornerstone of transgressive art.
If you like movies that feel like a Sunday school lecture disguised as a crime drama, then maybe. It is definitely for folks who don't mind a lot of finger-wagging and zero subtlety. If you hate stories where everyone is either a hardened criminal or a saint in waiting, you are going to find this one pretty unbearable.
Honestly, the whole thing feels like it was written on a napkin during a lunch break. Our lead cop lady is just too perfect. She’s the kind of person who sees a girl stealing a loaf of bread and immediately decides she’s going to invite her to live in her spare room and learn to knit.
The pacing is a bit of a headache. One minute we’re in a tense police station, and the next we’re watching a group of women learn the value of hard work through some very dry dialogue. It’s like the movie forgot it had a plot about a gangster halfway through and just pivoted to a self-help seminar.
Compared to something like Trooper O'Brien, this movie really lacks that grit. It feels safer, somehow. Like it’s afraid of its own premise. Even when things get 'dramatic,' nobody ever really raises their voice above a polite suggestion.
I caught myself looking at the wallpaper in one scene. It’s peeling in the corner. Nobody bothered to fix it, which is the most realistic thing in the whole house.
Is it a classic? Not even close. It reminds me a bit of the frantic energy in Be a Little Sport, but with way less joy. It’s just trying so hard to be a 'good influence' that it forgets to actually be a movie.
Watch it for the outfits, maybe? Or if you really, really love 1930s morality plays. Otherwise, you’re probably safe skipping it. It’s not going to ruin your day, but it’s not going to stick with you either. It’s just... there. 😐
