Biography
October 15, 1862, in the green folds of County Kildare, Amelia Summerville drew her first breath, the same lungs that would later thrill silent-era audiences. Between 1918 and 1926 she stalked the screen—first as the wayward Caroline, then as the desperate wife in The Witness for the Defense, and finally as the calculating mind at the heart of The Great Deception. Off-camera she collected surnames the way other people collect postcards: first Eugene Maria Stepan, later Frederick Russell Runnels. The final curtain fell on January 21, 1934, in New York City, the roar of Manhattan traffic replacing the flicker of klieg lights outside her window.
