Biography
Bernard Siegel first drew breath on 19 April 1868 amid the café-lined streets of Lemberg, Galicia—today’s Lviv, Ukraine—where Austro-Hungarian archways echoed with Yiddish theatre and military marches. Crossing the Atlantic with little more than a rolled-up repertoire, he carved out a screen persona that flickered between menace and melancholy: a tortured gypsy in the silent tragedy *The Wolf* (1914), a sun-scarred Foreign Legionnaire in *Beau Geste* (1926), and, most memorably, the weather-worn circus caretaker who nudges Lon Chaney toward heartbreak in *Laugh, Clown, Laugh* (1928). Forty-nine summers after his Galician beginnings, the actor closed his final act in Los Angeles, dying quietly on 9 July 1940 beneath the California palms that had replaced the cobblestones of his youth.
