Biography
On the day she turned twenty-four—March 27, 1895—Betty Schade drew her first breath in the North-Sea port town of Geestemunde, Germany. Within two decades she had crossed the Atlantic and traded the fog of the Elbe for the klieg lights of Hollywood, where she carved out a niche in fast-paced silent serials: she tangled with spies in *Perils of the Secret Service* (1917), traded punches in *Bare Fists* (1919), and chronicled a life story in *Deliverance* that same year. Off-screen she put words on paper as well as images on celluloid, doubling as writer and leading lady. Fritz Schade, the man who shared her surname, shared her life as well. Eighty-seven birthdays later, again on March 27, she died quietly in Los Angeles, California, leaving behind a flicker of stardom from cinema’s earliest blaze.
