Biography
San Jose, California, greeted C. Norman Hammond with its first spring light on 2 March 1878, and the boy who grew up among its orchards would later trade valley sunshine for the flicker of klieg lights. Between 1916 and 1922 he slipped into three vastly different skins: the moral battleground of *Where Are My Children?*, the clawing desperation of *The Grasp of Greed*, and the comic balm of *Dr. Jack*. Each role hit screens while silent films still murmured only through music and title cards, and Hammond’s face—angular, expressive—helped audiences read emotion in the dark. The final curtain fell on 5 June 1941, far from his western roots, in the restless midnight of New York City.
