Biography
A cavalry-post in the Arizona dust welcomed Charles Dudley on 10 October 1883, and by the flicker of nickelodeons he had turned that frontier childhood into a life behind the lens. Between 1914 and 1924 he shaped stories as both actor and director, slipping from the suspense of The Unexpected into the boxing drama of Fighting Fate and finally waking audiences with the dreamlike Rip Van Winkle. Nearly seven decades after his Fort Grant sunrise, he closed his eyes for good on 9 March 1952 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, leaving the screen lights a shade dimmer.
