On 25 May 1870, Halifax, Nova Scotia, welcomed Charles Hill Mailes into the world; six-and-a-half decades later, Los Angeles would close the curtain for him on 17 February 1937. Between those dates he built a screen career that flickered memorably in The Hungarian Nabob (1915), Money Madness (1917), and the 1920 adaptation of Treasure Island. Off-camera, he shared his life with fellow actor Claire McDowell.
