Biography

Born in England on 22 November 1878, Courtenay Foote stepped before the camera just as the silent era hit its stride. Audiences still remember his tormented clergyman in the 1924 adaptation of Tess of the D’Urbervilles, his swaggering settler in Little Old New York (1923), and the steel-heeled noble he brought to life in Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall that same year. While the lights of early Hollywood were still flickering, Foote’s own were extinguished on 4 May 1925, far from the studio lots, in Italy.
