Biography
A farmer’s daughter from Boorowa, New South Wales—born 12 April 1894—Dorothy Cumming slipped the paddocks for greasepaint and the glow of klieg lights. Between 1916 and 1928 she froze moments on celluloid: first as the original screen Snow White, later as the tormented aunt in The Lovelorn, and finally as the wind-battered Mormon wife stalked across the Utah plains in Victor Sjöström’s The Wind. Off-camera she collected two surnames, first Allan McNab, then Frank Elliott Dakin, before settling in Manhattan, where she died quietly on 10 December 1983.
