Biography
Born on a summer Monday in 1894, Elaine Hammerstein drew her first breath in the bustle of New York City and, before she turned thirty, had already stepped into flickering immortality. Between 1923 and 1924 alone she slipped from the glitter of Broadway to the glow of the silver sheet, dashing across The Midnight Express, scheming through Rupert of Hentzau, and trading innocence for experience in The Foolish Virgin. Off-camera she took James Walter Kays as her husband, but the final curtain fell far from home: on 13 August 1948, in Tijuana, Mexico, the lights dimmed for good.
